A melamine sponge is a white, lightweight sponge that looks ordinary at first glance and is also known as a “magic eraser.” It’s used in homes, offices and by cleaning companies because it removes many stains with just water – no cleaning chemicals needed.
What Is a Melamine Sponge?
A melamine sponge is made from melamine foam, whose very fine, dense structure works like ultra-fine sandpaper. When dampened, the sponge “sands” dirt off the surface at a microscopic level. That’s why the sponge itself gradually wears down with use.
What Stains Does It Remove?
- marker, ballpoint pen and colored pencil marks on walls;
- scuff marks on baseboards and doors;
- lipstick marks and fingerprints;
- dirt on light switches, around door handles and on furniture;
- stains on shoe sole edges and plastic surfaces.
How to Use a Melamine Sponge
- Dampen the sponge with water and squeeze out the excess.
- Gently rub the stain – no need to press hard.
- Finally, wipe the area with a damp cloth.
For small jobs, a melamine sponge is ideal, and for heavier use, a double-layer melamine sponge. For large surfaces – walls, floors and tiles – there’s a melamine scrubbing pad that attaches to a holder.
Where Not to Use a Melamine Sponge
Because the sponge acts as a gentle abrasive, it can damage:
- high-gloss and lacquered surfaces (glossy furniture, car paint);
- matte and delicate wall paints – it may leave a shiny spot;
- soft plastics and screens.
Always test in an inconspicuous spot first.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a cleaning product with a melamine sponge?
In most cases, water is enough. For greasy dirt, you can add a little all-purpose cleaner, but don’t use the sponge with harsh chemicals.
Why does the sponge wear out?
That’s normal – the sponge “sands away” the dirt and wears down along with it. That’s why it’s an inexpensive consumable.
